This phrase may be the greatest combination of two words that I have ever learned. If anyone reading this knows me that well, then it should be very obvious that I love to debate. Strike that, I love to win a debate. I've never been a very competitive person when it comes to sports or academia, but boy do I love letting someone know that they're wrong and I'm right. But this course of action has led people to one inevitable conclusion:
I'm an asshole.
And I don't like that. I try to view myself as a basically decent person. Flawed in some aspects, but where it counts, an alright guy. So, once I started to notice the looks and sighs people gave when I began to argue I decided I should tone it back. Do I still argue? God yes. I do enjoy it. Some of the best times I've ever had have been debating with Nathaniel but, alas, I would rather be a welcoming person than an off-putting one. So a few months ago I began to insert "fair enough" into my lexicon. A very simple phrase, but one that has helped me save face time and again. Once I notice myself or the other person becoming too emotionally invested in the argument, I say that. If that makes them feel like they've won, then good. I shouldn't be upset with myself knowing I helped boost someone's self-esteem.
Some of you may be thinking, "Man, why does this guy think I care? I hate him. He can't even quit smoking, even worse, FaceBook. I wish he'd suck a bag of dicks."
Fair enough.
